WTF Is Ghostlight?
A ghost light is the single bulb left burning on an empty stage after everyone goes home. This one's for everything that happens before and after the curtain.
What It Is
Ghostlight is a private, invite-only app for friends who go to a lot of theater, or a little. You can track what you've seen, rate and review it, see what friends thought, and find out who's going to what, and when, so you can tag along.
Why I Built It
I use Untappd for beer and Vivino for wine, but I had nothing for the thing I spend the most evenings on. My record of years of shows was a growing stack of Playbills and a lot of texts to friends asking “did you see it? what did you think? want to go?” I'd forget which ones I loved, which ones I walked out of grumbling, and who else had been.
Now I don't have to. Neither do you.
Who's Behind It
I'm Jesse Swingle. I live in Queen Anne, love theater, and work in marketing as my day job. Ghostlight is built, supported, and maintained by my company, Cedar Collaborative, a Seattle-based marketing company for nonprofits, small businesses, and startups.
How It Works
- It's invite-only. You sign in with a 6-digit code emailed to you, with no passwords.
- Everyone in the group sees each other's ratings, reviews, and plans. Private notes are visible only to you, though, if you want to secretly judge your friends in the show.
- Anyone can add a show. Ghostlight tries to fill in details like dates and runtime from the theater's own website where it can, and anyone can fix what it gets wrong.
- You can download your own diary any time from My Diary.
